Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good instrument to engage in political activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware from her mother. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in university. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as examine their junk. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. From this position she started her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
